Shutters built into the window

Plantation shutters are a premium, built-in style with exceptional durability. They are a fixed part of the window, framed and hinged, with wide louvres you can tilt for light and privacy. They are moisture-resistant and long-standing, and they change the look of a room more than almost any other option.

Our interior and plantation shutters are custom ordered for each opening, so the frame fits the window as it really is. Like every custom covering we offer, they start with a careful on-site measurement and finish with professional installation by our trained team. For us, that is the whole point.

Wood and composite

Custom wood shutters

Wood shutters have a natural, furniture-quality look. They can be painted or stained to suit your trim and decor. Wood is a good fit for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms.

Composite shutters

Composite shutters are made to be more resistant to moisture than natural wood. They are our usual suggestion for bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and sunrooms, and for lakeside cottages where humidity comes with the territory.

Louvre sizes

The louvre is the tilting slat. Wider louvres give a more open view and a cleaner look, with fewer slats to see through. Narrower louvres feel more traditional and suit smaller windows.

There is no universal right size. We help you choose by looking at the window, the room and the view. A big window overlooking the Bay of Quinte may suit wide louvres. A small, tall window in a century home may look better with a narrower style.

Moisture-prone rooms

Bathrooms and kitchens are tough on window coverings. Steam, splashes and temperature swings can warp or wear materials that are not suited to them. If a room regularly gets damp, tell us. We will recommend a material that can handle it.

Century homes and older windows

Belleville's east hill has many beautiful older homes, and Prince Edward County has farmhouses with original windows. These openings are often tall, deep and a little irregular. Because shutters are built for each opening, they can handle those quirks better than a ready-made product.

If your windows have decorative trim you want to keep visible, we can discuss mounting options and how the shutters will sit within or over the frame.

Light, privacy and airflow

Tilt the louvres open to let in daylight. Close them for privacy at night.

For a bedroom that needs to be very dark, shutters can be paired with drapery or blackout curtains.

A lasting investment

Shutters cost more up front than many other coverings, but they are built to last, and they become part of the house. A well-made set is something you notice every day and rarely have to replace. We will go through options with you honestly, and if another covering suits a window better, we will say so. Many clients tell us they wish they had made the switch sooner.

Frequently asked questions

Are shutters a good choice for a century home?

Often, yes. Shutters are built to the exact opening, so they suit tall, narrow or slightly out-of-square windows. Their frame also sits well with traditional trim and period detail.

Can shutters go in a bathroom or kitchen?

Yes, with the right material. Composite shutters are made to handle humidity and splashes better than natural wood, which is why we often suggest them for bathrooms and kitchens.

Are shutters worth the investment?

Shutters are built to last for years, and many people see them as part of the house rather than an accessory. We will talk through the options and what to expect at your consultation, with no pressure.
