Sheer horizontal shades softly filtering light in a bright kitchen

Soft, clean and made to measure

Shades are made from a single piece of fabric or woven material. They raise and lower, and they give a window a calm, tailored look. For many rooms, they are the simplest way to get privacy and light control without a lot of visual fuss.

Our shades are built to your exact window measurements and installed by our trained team. As an authorized Hunter Douglas dealer, we can show you product families such as Duette, Silhouette and Luminette, and we will talk you through other styles when they suit the room better. Explore the fabrics, see the patterns and test the lift systems in our Belleville showroom before you decide.

Types of shades

Cellular (honeycomb) shades

Known for energy efficiency, and the best solution for drafty windows. The insulating cell structure traps air at the window to reduce heat loss, which keeps a home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Hunter Douglas's Architella cellular construction goes further, helping reduce heating and cooling costs without compromising style. Duette is their well-known cellular family. Popular for bedrooms, family rooms and older homes.

Roller shades

A minimalist look: a flat piece of fabric rolls up into a tidy tube at the top. Available in sheer, light-filtering and blackout fabric, so they suit modern condos, kitchens, home offices and bedrooms alike.

Roman shades

Soft and elegant, adding warmth to any bedroom. Roman shades fold into tailored pleats as they rise and bring fabric and pattern to dining rooms, kitchens and living rooms where you want warmth without full-length drapery. They also work beautifully on tall windows.

Sheer and layered shades

Sheer and layered shades, including the Silhouette and Luminette families from Hunter Douglas, soften daylight while still giving you a view. They work well on large windows, patio doors and spots where you want light without glare. Waterfront condos in Kingston and cottages on the lake are good examples.

Woven wood shades

Natural texture and organic patterns. Woven wood shades are made from natural materials such as bamboo and grasses, and they suit cottages, farmhouses and rooms with wood trim.

Choosing the right shade

Think about three questions.

How much light do you want? Light-filtering fabrics keep a room glowing. Blackout fabrics keep it dark. Sheer styles keep the view.

How much privacy do you need? A street-facing window in Belleville's east hill needs different treatment from a rural window in the County.

What does the room do? Bedrooms, kitchens and home offices all ask different things of a window.

We walk through all of this at your free consultation, with samples in hand so you can see how fabrics look in your light. Many homeowners layer shades under full-length drapery for precise light control plus decorative style.

Frequently asked questions

Are cellular shades worth it for Ontario winters?

Their honeycomb shape traps a layer of air at the window, which helps reduce the chill you feel near the glass. They will not replace good windows, but many homeowners find rooms more comfortable with them.

Can I get shades that let in light but keep privacy?

Yes. Sheer and layered shades are designed for exactly that. They soften daylight and still give you a view out, and many can be closed more fully when you want privacy.

What is the difference between a shade and a blind?

Blinds have slats that tilt. Shades are made from a continuous piece of fabric or woven material that raises and lowers. Shades feel softer and give a cleaner look when closed.
